✂️ Small chip
A small piece of enamel off the edge, often a front tooth. Usually no pain, just a rough or sharp edge.
Usual repair: smoothing, or tooth-coloured bonding in one visit.

Bit on something hard, had a fall, or a piece of an old filled tooth came away? Most broken and chipped teeth can be repaired so they look and work like before, often in one visit. The sooner it’s seen, the more of the tooth can be saved.
What’s needed depends on how deep the break goes. A chip in the enamel and a crack into the nerve are very different.

A bigger piece is gone and the tooth may be sensitive to cold or air, because the dentine is exposed.
Usual repair: a filling, bonding or a crown.
A back tooth with a large old filling breaks while eating. Often painless at first.
Usual repair: a new filling or, more often, a crown to stop it splitting.
A fine crack you can’t see. Sharp pain when biting or letting go, or with cold.
Usual repair: a crown to hold it together, sometimes with root canal treatment.
You can see pink or red in the middle of the tooth, or there’s strong pain or bleeding from the tooth.

A cracked tooth often looks normal. The classic sign is a sharp, brief pain when you bite on something, or just as you release your bite, usually on one back tooth. Cold may also trigger it. The pain comes and goes, which makes it easy to put off.
Every bite flexes the crack. It can spread deeper, reach the nerve and, eventually, split the tooth so it can’t be saved. Treated early, a crown usually holds the tooth together for many years.
We test each tooth with a bite stick, look closely with the intraoral camera, and use a digital X-ray to rule out other causes.
If you grind your teeth, a night guard protects repaired teeth from breaking again.
We choose the repair that saves the most natural tooth and lasts, and explain the options before we start.
Tooth-coloured composite is shaped onto the tooth and hardened with light. Ideal for chips on front teeth. Usually one visit.

A thin shell over the front of a chipped front tooth, when bonding isn’t enough or you want a more lasting finish.
When the break or crack reaches the nerve. Saves the tooth instead of removing it.
If the tooth can’t be saved, a dental implant replaces it with a fixed tooth. Implant guide
Many broken teeth are removed that could have been saved. In 26 years on Hutchins Road, Dr. Farooq (BDS, FAGE, with professional diplomas in endodontics and implant dentistry) has repaired chipped front teeth, cracked molars and teeth broken in accidents, and knows when a tooth is worth saving and when an implant is the better choice.
You get direct access to Dr. Farooq, a clear explanation and a written quote before treatment.

A small painless chip isn’t an emergency, but book within a few days so it doesn’t chip further. Come in the same day if there’s strong pain, bleeding from the tooth, pink showing in the middle, or the tooth has been knocked loose or out.
Yes. A broken tooth is weaker and can break further, and the exposed inner layer decays faster. Painless breaks are usually quicker and simpler to repair than ones left until they hurt.
No. Unlike bone, teeth can’t knit back together. A crack can only be held together (usually with a crown) to stop it spreading. Early treatment gives the best chance of keeping the tooth.
Throbbing at night usually means the nerve is inflamed or infected. The tooth likely needs root canal treatment. See our tooth pain guide and call us.
Darkening after an injury often means the nerve inside has been damaged or has died. Black areas inside a broken back tooth can also be decay. Both need checking, as a dead nerve can become infected without pain.
Bonding a chip is usually done in a single visit. A crown takes two visits a few days apart, with a temporary cover in between. Root canal treatment adds one to three visits.
Yes. Bonding, veneers and crowns are matched to the shade and shape of your other teeth. See our cosmetic dentistry guide.
Call us and send a photo. Keep any piece in milk. A knocked-out milk tooth shouldn’t be put back (it can damage the adult tooth underneath), but a knocked-out adult tooth should be, as quickly as possible.
It depends on the repair: bonding, a crown or a root canal. We don’t publish price lists. You’ll get a written quote before treatment, and the consultation is free if you go ahead with treatment.
