Signs your gums need attention

Healthy gums are pale pink, firm, and don’t bleed when you brush. Any of these means they’re inflamed:

🪥 Bleeding when you brush or floss

Pink spit or blood on the brush. The most common early sign, and the one most people ignore because it doesn’t hurt.

🎈 Red, swollen or puffy gums

Gums that look shiny, swollen between the teeth, or feel tender to touch.

😮‍💨 Bad breath that keeps coming back

Bacteria under the gum line cause a bad smell or taste that brushing doesn’t fix.

📏 Gums pulling back

Teeth look longer, gaps appear near the gum line, or teeth feel sensitive to cold.

🦷 Loose or shifting teeth

Teeth that move, spread apart or feel different when you bite. A sign of advanced gum disease.

🩹 Pus or a gum boil

A swelling or pimple on the gum, with pain or a bad taste. This is an infection and needs prompt care.

🔍 Why gums bleed and swell

What causes bleeding and swollen gums

In most adults the cause is plaque and tartar along the gum line. Other things make gums more likely to react.

Most common

🦠 Plaque & tartar

Bacteria collect along the gum line and harden into tartar, which a brush can’t remove. The gums become inflamed and bleed.

Technique

🪥 Brushing too hard

A hard brush or scrubbing sideways injures the gums and makes them recede. A soft brush and gentle circles are better.

Hormones

🤰 Pregnancy

Pregnancy hormones make gums swell and bleed easily (“pregnancy gingivitis”). A cleaning during pregnancy is safe and helps.

Health

🩺 Diabetes & smoking

Diabetes makes gum disease worse and harder to control. Smoking and tobacco hide bleeding while the damage continues.

Around one tooth

🦷 Wisdom tooth or trapped food

A swollen gum at the back is often a wisdom tooth. Food stuck between teeth or a broken filling can inflame one spot.

Medicines

💊 Medicines & deficiencies

Blood thinners, some blood-pressure and seizure medicines, and a lack of vitamin C can make gums bleed or swell.

🩺 See a doctor as well if

  • Your gums bleed on their own, not just when brushing, or bleeding is hard to stop.
  • You also get easy bruising, nosebleeds, tiredness, fever or weight loss.
  • Your face is swollen with fever, or you have trouble swallowing or breathing (go to a hospital).

Rarely, bleeding gums are a sign of a blood or general health problem. If we suspect this, we’ll tell you and suggest a blood test or a physician.

📈 How gum disease progresses

From bleeding gums to loose teeth

Gum disease is one of the main reasons adults lose teeth. The earlier it’s treated, the simpler and more complete the recovery.

Reversible

1. Gingivitis

Red, puffy gums that bleed when brushing. Only the gums are affected. A professional cleaning and better home care usually reverse it within a few weeks.

Controllable

2. Early periodontitis

Infection spreads below the gum line and pockets form between gum and tooth. Bone loss begins. Deep cleaning stops it from getting worse.

Act now

3. Advanced periodontitis

Gums recede, bone is lost and teeth loosen. Treatment aims to save the teeth that can be saved. Lost teeth can be replaced with implants or bridges.

🛠️ How we treat gums

Gum treatment at Zenith Dental Care

Most people need a professional cleaning and a better routine. Deeper treatment is only for deeper disease.

1🔍

Gum check

We measure the pockets around each tooth, check for loose teeth and look at the gums on the intraoral camera with you.

2🩻

X-ray if needed

A digital X-ray shows whether the bone around the teeth has been affected.

3🪥

Scaling & polishing

Removing plaque and tartar above and just below the gum line. For gingivitis, this is usually all that’s needed.

4🧹

Deep cleaning

For pockets, we clean the root surfaces under the gum (root planing) with local anaesthetic so you’re comfortable.

5✨

Laser-assisted care

Dr. Farooq holds a professional diploma in laser dentistry. Where it suits your case, the dental laser helps treat inflamed gum tissue.

6📅

Keep it healthy

A home-care routine that works for you, and regular cleanings. Gum disease comes back if tartar builds up again.

🎁 Annual Dental Health Plan

Two cleanings a year are included

The clinic’s Annual Dental Health Plan is made for keeping gums healthy: ₹2,499 a year (was ₹3,449) includes two scaling and polishing visits, unlimited free consultations, 7.5% off treatment (up to ₹5,000) and a free soft-bristle toothbrush with a brushing guide.

See the Annual Plan

Gum problems we treat

  • Bleeding when brushing
  • Swollen, puffy gums
  • Bad breath
  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Gum boils and pus
  • Pregnancy gingivitis
  • Swelling around wisdom teeth
🪥 Things you can do today

Caring for bleeding gums at home

  • Keep brushing, gently, twice a day. Bleeding gums need more cleaning, not less.
  • Use a soft-bristle brush, angled at the gum line, with small circles.
  • Clean between your teeth once a day with floss or small interdental brushes.
  • Use a fluoride toothpaste. Rinse with warm salt water if the gums are sore.
  • Cut down on tobacco. It hides the bleeding while gum disease gets worse.

If bleeding hasn’t stopped after two weeks of good brushing, the cause is tartar under the gum, which only a cleaning removes.

❓ Questions patients ask

Bleeding & swollen gums FAQs

Why do my gums bleed when I brush?

Most often because plaque and tartar along the gum line have inflamed the gums (gingivitis). Inflamed gums bleed at the slightest touch. Brushing too hard with a hard brush can also cause it. A cleaning plus gentle, thorough brushing usually stops it within a couple of weeks.

What are bleeding gums a sign of?

Usually early gum disease. Less often: pregnancy hormones, diabetes, blood-thinning medicines, vitamin deficiency or, rarely, a blood disorder. If your gums bleed without brushing, or you also bruise easily or feel unwell, see a doctor too.

Should I stop brushing if my gums bleed?

No. Keep brushing gently with a soft brush. Avoiding the bleeding area lets more plaque build up, which makes the bleeding worse.

How do I fix swollen gums?

Swelling across many teeth is usually gum inflammation from tartar: a professional cleaning and good home care settle it. Swelling around one tooth can be an abscess, a wisdom tooth or trapped food, and needs that tooth checked. Swelling with fever or spreading to the face needs prompt care.

My gums bleed but don’t hurt. Is it serious?

Gum disease is usually painless until it’s advanced, which is why it’s easy to ignore. Painless bleeding is the best time to treat it, while it can still be reversed.

Is it normal for gums to bleed during pregnancy?

It’s common, because pregnancy hormones make gums react strongly to plaque. It’s worth treating: a cleaning during pregnancy is safe, and the middle three months are the most comfortable time. Tell us how far along you are.

Can bleeding gums make my teeth loose?

Yes, if gum disease is left untreated for years. The infection destroys the bone that holds the teeth, and they loosen. Treating it early prevents this. If teeth are already loose, deep cleaning can often stabilise them.

Why do my gums still bleed after a cleaning?

Gums may bleed for a few days after scaling while they heal. If they still bleed after two weeks, there may be deeper pockets that need deep cleaning, or areas your brushing misses. We’ll check and show you where.

Do children get bleeding gums?

Yes, usually from plaque when brushing is rushed, or swelling when new teeth come through. If a child’s gums bleed often, bring them in for a check.

How much does gum treatment cost?

It depends on whether you need a routine cleaning or deep cleaning. We don’t publish price lists; you’ll get a written quote first. Two cleanings a year are included in the Annual Dental Health Plan.
